Walking

The Lakes offers superb walking routes ranging from short, gentle rambles in Whinlatter Forest and around Derwent Water and Buttermere, to tough demanding climbs on Helvellyn, Cat Bells, Borrowdale, Buttermere, Skiddaw and Grisedale Pike. The Borrowdale Valley and Buttermere area also provide tougher walks (e.g. Scafell and Haystacks).

It is advisable to buy a guide book and plan your excursions beforehand. Knowledgeable local guides also lead regular guided walks throughout the year, many of which start from the Moot Hall in the centre of Keswick.

The Bond has also commissioned a number of walks of varying distances and difficulty, and these are on sale at Reception (or available to download).

Other maps and walking books are provided in the information centre.
